Thelma Maxine Showalter Newton passed on March 29, 2009, at White County Medical Center. She was born into the loving arms of Abbie and Jessie Showalter on November 8, 1921, at Showalter’s Corner, Arkansas.

She was a star basketball player during her high school years at West Point, Arkansas. In 1940, she was recruited to be come a member of the Lewis and Norwood Flyers, an AAU basketball team in Little Rock. In her first year of play, the Flyers won the AAU National Women’s Tournament. She was a star player along side the legendary late Hazel Walker. She was known as “Show” by her teammates, in part because of uncanny ability to put on a show by shooting the basketball and scoring. After traveling the county playing basketball with the Flyers, she finished her career in 1945. She was the first native of White County to be named an All American basketball player on any level of play.

She is survived by her adoring children; Sandra Holmes (William) of Conway, William Lynn Newton of Searcy, Connie Feagin (Michael) of Greenbrier, and Dr. Robert G. Newton of Hot Springs; grandchildren Christopher Feagin (Tanya) of Greenbrier, Jeremy Holmes (Elaine) of Greenbrier, Justin Holmes (Michelle) of Vilonia, and Michael Ryan Feagin (Candy) of Benton; nine and one-half great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is survived by a sister Emogene Wilson of Searcy; brothers Harry Showalter (Dora Lee) of Searcy; Calvin Showalter (Rena) of Atlanta, Georgia; and sisters-in-law Jean Showalter and Mattie Ruth Showalter, both of Searcy.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Robert Hassell Newton; her parents; and four brothers; Merl Showalter, Ralph Showalter, Hugh Showalter, and Russell Showalter.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Roller-Daniel Funeral Home with interment following at White County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 31, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Roller-Daniel Funeral Home.
