When James Luther Whitten was born on September 19, 1859, in Mississippi, his father, William, was 35 and his mother, Ann, was 34. He married Sarah Martin on November 24, 1881. They had nine children in 11 years. He died on May 10, 1925, in White, Arkansas, at the age of 65, and was buried in White, Arkansas.
