Mother Esteree Johnson of Sumpter, SC, formerly of Camden, departed this life Saturday, May 7, 2016. She was born March 25, 1932 in Leton, Louisiana to John Wesley and Ethel Maxey Hanley who preceded her in death.
At a early age she saw the marvelous light of Christ and was saved under the leadership of the late Elder John L. Kirkpatrick in Cullen, Louisiana. Later she moved to Camden, Arkansas and served at Hatley Memorial Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Supt. Bishop R. B. Hatley until his demise. She then served under the leadership of Supt. R. L. Harbor until he was led by the Lord to start a new work. After Supt. Harbor left she served under the leadership of Bishop J. E. Williams at Hatley Memorial Church of God in Christ which later merged with Greater Love Church of God in Christ where she remained a member until her death.
Mother Johnson worked in various departments and auxiliaries within the church including Sunday School Teacher, Pastor’s Aid, Mother’s Board and Sister Love. Mother Johnson worked at the Camden Furniture Factory for several years. She was a seamstress and spent a lot of her spare time in her sewing room. She loved making beautiful handkerchiefs.
Mother Esteree Johnson was united in marriage to Sam Johnson November 1948. To this union, three children were born. Two preceded her in death.
Mother Esteree Johnson leaves to cherish her memories one son, Samuel Ray (Annie) Johnson of Sumpter, SC; her mother, Bessie Hanley of Camden, AR; one sister, Mattie Harbor of Camden, AR; two brothers, Bobby Hanley of Camden, AR and Charles Neal of Malvern, AR fourteen grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Graveside service for Mother Johnson will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 20, 2016 in Memorial Park Cemetery in Camden. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the funeral home. Proctor Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.
