Mrs. Lucy B. Scales, 71, 1005 W. Oak St., died Sunday night in a local hospital following a long illness. She was born Jan. 8, 1894 in Union County, the daughter of William Warner and Lucy Gresham Brown. Mrs. Scales was the widow of Jesse L. Scales who operated the El Dorado Pharmacy from 1922 to 1944. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a charter member of the Philli[p Rayford chapter of the Colonel Dames of the 17th Century, a charter member of the Champagnolle chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a charter member and past president of the Union County chapter of the Pioneer Association, a member and twice president of the Herny G. Burns chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She organized and was the first commissioner of the El Dorado Girl Scout Council. She was a member and past president of the El Dorado Garden Club, a member of the Board of the Y. W. C. A., and active in the Red Cross. Survivors are one son, W. B. (Bill) Scales, Texas City, Tex.; three brothers, James S. Brown of El Dorado, Walter Warner Brown of El Dorado, and Joel Gresham Smith of Quitman, La.; one sister, Mrs. Albert C. Prothro of El Dorado and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Don Harbuck at the First Baptist Church Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Rumph Mortuary. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the funeral. Active pallbearers will be Earl Prothro, Fergus Brown, W. W. Brown, Rodney Landes, Emmett Coley, Max Moody, Murray Kinard and Marion Smith. Honorary pallbearers will include Burney Wilson, G. P. Gammill, Dr. J. B. Wharton, Jr., Dr. Hilery E. Hanna, Bob Little, Joe K. Mahony, A. F. Peters, John A. Coley, Henry Carroll and John Alley. (The El Dorado Times - May 17, 1965)
