BENTONVILLE — John O. Kumpe Jr., 74, of Bentonville died April 15, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 23, 1931, in Fayetteville to John O. Kumpe Sr. and Lora Henderson Kumpe. He was a 1949 graduate of Bentonville High School. He served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force. He attended Arkansas Tech. He was 1957 honor graduate from the University of Arkansas, with a major in animal nutrition, a minor in chemistry. He was chancellor of Alpha Zeta and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Gamma Sigma Delta and the University of Arkansas poultry judging team. He worked for the National Broiler Council, Western Hatcheries, Kimber Farms and Whitmore Laboratories, before joining Dawe's Inc. in 1967. He was named salesman of the year in 1968, 1969 and 1970. In 1982, he moved from Springdale to Centerton, where he owned and operated a cattle and turkey farm. He returned to Bentonville in 2004. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bentonville.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jo Ella Moody Kumpe of the home; one brother, James H. Kumpe of Asheville, N.C.; three daughters, Jacque Lindsey and husband Harold of Springdale, Clair Travis and husband Steve of Bella Vista and Sandy Pruitt and husband Randy of Bentonville; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Services will he at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Bentonville with the Rev. Dennis Spence and the Rev. Ben Hines officiating.
Burial will be in Bentonville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home in Bentonville.
Pallbearers will be Harold Lindsey, Steve Travis, Randy Pruitt, Bryce Travis, Andy Pruitt, Mitch Pruitt, Tim Kumpe Jr. and Jack Cavness.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Bentonville or Washington Regional Hospice, 34 W. Colt Square 1, Fayetteville, 72703.
