Marvin "Sam" Summers, 89, ECMC, USCG (Ret) of 10 Manatuck Drive in Waterford, passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Fountainview Healthcare in Waterford.
Sam was born on Sept. 13, 1919, in White County, Ark., the son of Walter C. and Dora Jane Summers.
He was married to the late Lucille Keeling Summers who passed away in 2002.
Sam was a Coast Guard veteran of both World War II and Korea, retiring from the service as a Master Chief following a 22 year career. He was extremely proud of his service to the Coast Guard and to his country.
After the service, Sam began a career of over 40 years as the owner and operator of Summers T. V. & Repairs in Groton.
He is survived by a daughter, Vonnie Summers of Groton; his son and daughter in law, Frank and Linda Summers of Waterford; and four grandchildren, Frank, Steven, Jessica and Kathleen
Sam had also been predeceased by one sister and six brothers.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. His burial with military honors will be held in the Huntsville Cemetery, Huntsville, Ark.

Lucille Summers, 83, of Groton, Conn., died Oct. 28, 2002, at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. She was born Dec. 2, 1918, at Huntsville, Ark., the daughter of Luther William and Stella Hawkins Keeling. She had been in sales for more than thirty years for the former Bradlee's Department Stores. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Keeling and one sister, Mrs. Jean Quarentello.
Survivors include: her husband, Marvin Summers of the home whom she married on April 12, 1944; one son, Frank Summers of Waterford, Conn.; one daughter, Mary Y. Summers of Groton, Conn.; two brothers, Ray Keeling of San Bernardino, Calif. and William "Bill: Keeling of Huntsville, Ark.; four sisters, Lorene Archer of Los Angeles, Calif., Helen Garrigan of Tulsa, Okla., Magie Starnes of Hindsville, Ark. and Sue King of Springdale, Ark.; two grandsons, Frank A. Summers and Steven M. Summers; and two granddaughters, Jessica A. Summers and Kathleen S. Summers.
Graveside services were held Friday, Nov. 1, at the Huntsville Cemetery with Rev. Leslie Elam officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Post Office Box 31160, Hartford, CT, 06150-1160.
