Vergil Burke,78, departed this life on December 10, 2008 at his home in Prescott, AR, to live in his heavenly home in the New Jerusalem. A born-again child of God, Vergil gladly shared the gospel of Christ with anyone he met. He was a devoted deacon and minister, a member of Park Missionary Baptist Church of Prescott, a Korean War veteran who made 32 jumps as a paratrooper, and a baseball fan who passed that love of the game to his kids.
Vergil was born April 19, 1930, in Austin, AR to Walter Scott and Dora Counts Burke. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill Burke and Jerald Burke; three sisters, Lorene Collins, Mable Cotton, and Lena Mae Ulmer.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Mildred Farrer Burke; two sons, Larry(Linda)Burke of Hope, AR, and Robert Burke of Prescott; three daughters,Sharon(Gary)Crane of Texarkana, AR, Debra(Jorge)Nassar of Prescott, and Phyllis(Mike) Hicks of Prescott; 30 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe(Doris)Burke of Prescott; three sisters,Julia Polston of Blytheville,AR,Bessie (Bill) Morehead of Pasadena,TX,and Elsie Smith of Texas City,TX; a great number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral held at 2 pm, Friday, Dec 12, at Park Church with burial at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery,Prescott, under direction of Pharr Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Park Church building fund, or to the Nevada Co. Cancer Society.
