SPRINGDALE — Haskel Martin, 82, of Springdale died April 13, 2002, in Springdale. He was born July 18, 1919, in Friley to Alexander and Ida Mayes Martin. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps' Ozone Camp in Idaho. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European theater, and he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was decorated with the Bronze Stars and marksmanship ribbons.
He was part of the GI farm program with the University of Arkansas, farming in Clarksville. He moved to Springdale in 1957 and retired after 30 years as a diesel mechanic and wrecker driver for Skelton Motor Co. He was a craftsman and a Pentecostal.
Survivors include his wife, Aften Griffith Martin, whom he married May 6, 1947; one son, Charles Martin and wife Joyce of Springdale; three brothers, Andy Martin of Tulsa, Okla., Clifton Martin of Vinita, Okla., and Buddy Martin of Mountain Top; four sisters, Alta Hill of Fayetteville, Avo Huhbard of Grannis, Geneva Lyman of California and Norma O'Connor of Mountain Top; two grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home in Springdale, with the Rev. Howard Moseley and the Rev. Danny McCulley officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery, with military honors provided the Northwest Arkansas Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will he James Emery, Gene Green, J.C. Hill, T.J. Hill, Jessie Shackelford and Rusty Martin. Honorary Pallbearer will he W.C. Grimes.
