William Dale Varner, 86 yrs of Springdale, AR, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at the Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville, AR. Dale was born on Jan. 27, 1926, at Brea, Calif. He was the son of Preston and Florence Wollert Varner. He married Dolores J. Clark on Jan. 6, 1946, at Jacksonville, Fla., and celebrated 66 years of marriage on Jan. 6, 2013.
Dale was an attorney and practiced law in Brea, Calif., and Springdale, Ark. He was also a deputy prosecutor for the Washington County Prosecutor's Office in Fayetteville for seven years and enjoyed teaching law at the University of Arkansas for a while.
Dale is also a WWII veteran and served as a Naval Gunnery Officer on a destroyer in the Atlantic. He also served as a Naval Officer in the Korean War, in which his ship (a destroyer - USS Blue) took part in many battles at Wonsan Harbor. His ship participated in the longest ship to shore bombardment in Naval history.
Dale has also a service station owner, a policeman in Brea, Calif., and an investigator for the Orange County District Attorney's Office in Santa Ana, Calif. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed leather tooling as a hobby.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores of the home; one son, Mark P. Varner and his wife Maria and his children, Keaka, Mary Lani, Willie, Mattie, Marcus, Clark and Annie; a daughter, Mary Denise Wallin and her children, Matthew, Brent, Jimmie and Katie; a daughter, Laura Ann Bailey and her husband, James Bailey and her children, Jason, Jenny and Emily. Dale and Dolores have 14 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Dale also had two brothers, Jack and Calvin Varner; two sisters, Phyllis and Sandra, all of whom are deceased.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, starting at 11 a.m. for family and friends at Brashears Funeral Home in Huntsville and the funeral service will be held at the Springdale Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1 p.m. on Jan. 24. The Stake Center is located in Har-Ber Village just off of 412 West in Springdale. A graveside service will be held after the funeral at the Huntsville Cemetery at which a Naval Honor Guard will be present.
Dale was well thought of and liked by everyone who knew him, and he will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
