Mr. Billy Lee Hughes, 69, of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at his home. He was born November 12, 1944 in Swifton, the son of Paul and Ruby Helen (Romine) Hughes.

Mr. Hughes retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company on June 29, 2001 after 33 years as a service repairman. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during Vietnam. Mr. Hughes enjoyed gardening, yard work, fishing, and hunting. It has been said that he would rather duck hunt than eat. Mr. Hughes was always serving others first, never asking anything in return. He volunteered at Watson Cemetery and R and I Fire Department.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Infant Billy Ray Hughes; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Marlene (Gilliaum) Hughes of the home; one son, Ty Hughes and wife Deavan of Newport; one daughter, Traynee Bledsoe Rash and husband Mike of Shreveport, Louisiana; and four grandchildren, Tyler Rash, Logan Rash, Destiny Hughes, and Jaxson Hughes.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday evening, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Watson Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Dennis Jarrett, Mike Smith, Scott Jones, Jimmy Baker, Tyler Rash, and Logan Rash. Honorary pallbearers are Nicky Miller, Frankie Harris, Mike Rash, Shannon Gilliaum, Paul Gilliaum, Chad Harris, Chip Youngblood, and Daniel Perrin.
