James Orville Champlin (Champ), age 80, of Cabot, Arkansas, passed away on November 17, 2007, into the arms of his Heavenly Father. Mr. Champlin was called “Champ” by many, many friends. He was born into this world on April 30, 1927, to James A. Champlin and Blanche Skinner Champlin of Austin, Arkansas.

Mr. Champlin served in the Naval Seabees during World War II. He was instrumental in the building of a major causeway in Guam and later in the restoration of Pearl Harbor. He was very honored to serve his country so that others could continue to be free. He retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where he spent many hours making sure everyone had their telephones in working order. He used many of his skills and much knowledge helping victims of Hurricane Katrina in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.

He was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Cabot, Arkansas, a member of Gideon’s International, a Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneer. He was also a retired farmer, carpenter and an avid deer hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Champlin was preceded in death by his father and mother, James A. and Blanche Champlin and an infant brother.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Mary Ellen Roland Champlin; two daughters, Janice (Bill) Muse of Sherwood, Arkansas and Brenda (Garland Gene) Yarbrough of Redfield, Arkansas; a sister and brother, Mildred Dickerson of Conway, Arkansas and Clarence Wilton Champlin of California. He was blessed with two grandchildren, DeNise (Bob) Enck of Alabama and David (Cristin) Groce of Rhode Island, two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Champlin was always prepared, organized and waiting on his Heavenly Father to call him home to Heaven. He invites you to come, too. Please join in the celebration of his life.

His family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2007, at Westbrook Funeral Home, Beebe, Arkansas. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Cabot with burial in 16th Section Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International or Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 301 Bill Foster Memorial Hwy., Cabot, AR 72023.
