Curtis (aka Curtis-Acklin) Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

A view of the older part of the Curtis Cemetery in late May 2008. The Curtis Cemetery is in the Ozark National Forest on Baxter County Road 128 less than a quarter of a mile east of Arkansas Highway 341 (Push Mountain Road).

The land for the cemetery was donated by Sparta Van Buren Curtis. The oldest marked grave was from 1892. There are many graves that are marked by fieldstones as shown in this pictures, and probably many of them pre-date 1892. Most of the burials date to the first three decades of the twentieth century.

The cemetery was originally called the Curtis Cemetery; however, during the 1940's and 1950's, it became known as the Acklin Cemetery. Several Acklin families lived nearby, and Ethel Berry (Mrs. Theodore "Dora") Acklin ran a small store in the community. During that period of time most of the older families had moved away, and the Acklin group was the only ones that were using it as a burial ground. The graves of the Acklin related families are all near the entrance to the cemetery and that section was somewhat kept up. The rest of the cemetery grew up in brush and timber so that it was impossible to even gain access to many of the graves. In 2003, a group headed by Larry & Joyce Havner and Emmit Dolan Acklin spearheaded an effort to re-claim the cemetery. After several years of extensive work, the cemetery is now well cared for. The group also decided to revert back to the old name of Curtis Cemetery when referring to the cemetery, and now all the ones associated with the cemetery call it by that name.

Even though the cemetery is now well kept, it is seldom used.
