A Conway man was one of two men killed in an Interstate 40 crash Saturday evening, Arkansas State Police said Sunday.
Maurice J. Miller, 44, of Conway died of injuries suffered in the 5:05 p.m. three-vehicle accident. Miller, driver of a 1993 Plymouth, was traveling alone westbound near the 130 mile marker, about a mile east of Highway 286, when a pickup crossed the median from eastbound traffic and struck his vehicle head on.
A passenger of the 1994 GMC pickup, James C. Maier, 22, of Pine Bluff, died after he was ejected from the impact of the collision.
The head-on impact caused the pickup to spin into the path of a westbound Snyder Trucking Co. 1998 tractor-trailer, driven by Timothy Goldsmith of Pinewood, SC. Goldsmith was not injured.
Oliver "Ray" Kelley, 21, of Sherrill, driver of the pickup, was ejected when the pickup hit the tractor-trailer, throwing him over the hood and windshield, where he fell between the cab and the trailer.
Kelley was found holding onto the drive shaft of the tractor-trailer that came to rest in the ditch 400 feet after going through the median and crossing both eastbound lanes.
Kelley was in serious condition Sunday evening at UAMS Medical Center, where he was transferred from Conway Regional Medical Center.
Cpl. Troy Brown of the State Police said from the parking lot of Jim Smith Wrecker Service it was difficult to sort the details of the scene because of the severe property damage and trauma to the occupants of the three vehicles.
Interstate 40 traffic stalled for two hours in both directions while State Police worked the accident, and local authorities assisted with traffic and emergency crews.
