GARRITY, John - John Garrity was born in Ireland June 24, 1836 and died at Bentonville, Ark. at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. T.O. Tucker, July 1, 1909. He came to America when about 20 years old and settled near Richmond, Va. He came to Arkansas in 1881 and settled near Brightwater where he resided until about three years ago when he came to make his home with Mrs. Tucker at Bentonville. He was married to Miss Bridget Boyle in August 1864. To them were born six children (two boys and four girls) all of whom survive him. His wife, who had been his life-long and faithful companion, died Oct. 21, 1906. Bro. Garrity was ill only a short while and the end came suddenly and unexpectedly. He insisted up to a few moments of his death that he was able to help himself. There was a very significant co-incident in his life. He left his native land because of the oppression of his people by England and always took great interest in "Independence Day" in America; remarking often that he would like to be buried on the 4th of July. It so happened; for on the 4th of July 1909 we sealed his body in the vault at Rogers. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and was to the day of his death a lover of his church. He was in good standing with his church although he had not lived for years where he had church privileges as he desired them. He was honored and loved by all who knew him. Many say of him, "He was a good, Christian man." The writer did not know him well but found him to be a man of high ideals and noble purposes. He was a good citizen, a loving companion, a kind father and, best of all, a good man. His death was a great sorrow to his children, most of whom were not permitted to be with him in his last hours because of the great distance. His loved ones who were with him did all that loving hearts and kind hands could do for him. Father Bandini conducted a funeral service at the residence and the writer conducted a burial service at the Rogers Cemetery where we interred his body. May God bless all the loved ones and especially the children and grandchild who could not be present at the funeral. R.E.L. Bearden.
