Reverend S.D. Mitchell, went home to glory, on March 8, 2013 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 18, 1935, at Eudora, Arkansas, to Daniel Mitchell and Classie Johnson Mitchell, and was reared by Agnes Mitchell.

S.D.’s brother, Ivory, taught him the trade of Brick Masonry, later resulting in the formation of Mitchell Brothers Construction, now known as Mitchell Masonry. This trait he shared with many young men in the River Valley area as a teacher, mentor, father figure and friend. His handy work can be seen from McDonalds's across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. After over forty years of working as a masonry contractor, he semi-retired in 2010, leaving his legacy of leadership to his son, Dale Mitchell.

During a revival at the Russellville Church of God in Christ, S.D. Fimade a commitment to the Lord and soon he felt a call to the ministry. Elder S.D. Mitchell was ordained in the Church of God in Christ in 1974 under the leadership of Bishop D. L. Lindsey and was appointed the Pastor of the Caney Church of God in Christ in 1975 which was later renamed Sinai Church of God in Christ in Conway.

He was appointed in 2010 as the District Superintendent of the Conway District, Regional Coordinator of Region One and in 2011 he was appointed as 2nd Jurisdiction of Arkansas Church Trustee.

Superintendent Mitchell was preceded in death by brothers, Jasper Mitchell, Ivory Mitchell Sr. Lem Mitchell and sisters, Laura Brown, Earnestine Easter, Alberta Jones, Lizzie Moore and Mabel Simmons.

He is survived by his devoted wife, La Donna Mitchell; Daughters, Vicky Mitchell, Pine Bluff, Shelia Parker, Glassboro, NJ, Barbara Mitchell, Memphis TN, Donna Black, Russellville, Shelia (Richard) Walker, Russellville, Nancy (Johnnie) Jones, New Orleans, LA, Cassandra (Edward) Terry, Maumelle; Sons: Andy (Lorna) Mugabe, Hot Springs, Sylvester (Angie) Mitchell, Hot Springs, Ronald Smith, Seattle Washington, James Smith, Fresno, CA, Dennis Smith, Tulsa OK, Dale Mitchell, Russellville; 29 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; Sisters, Ida Taylor (Jimmy), and Mary Williams of Omaha, NE, and Brenda Watson - Houston TX; brother, Daniel Mitchell, Jr., Russellville.

The official home going celebration will be at 11 am, Saturday, March 16, 2013 A.D. at West Side Church of Christ, 2300 West C Street, Russellville. Bishop Frank J. Anderson, Jr., Reverend D. L. Lindsey and Robert Thurlby, M.D. will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to Humphrey Funeral Service, under the direction of Mr. Jim Bob Humphrey and his staff, 2801 West Main Street, Russellville, (479-968-4411).

Superintendent Mitchell will be laid to rest at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville.

The family and friends from the Russellville area will gather for a wake from 7 to 8:30 pm, on Thursday, at the funeral home.

The family and friends in the Conway area will gather for a wake at 6-8 pm on Friday at the Sinai Church of God in Christ, Hwy 286 East, Conway in celebration of thirty-nine years of Pastoral care.

Active pallbearers will be: Superintendents and Pastors of the COGIC’s Second Jurisdiction of Arkansas; honorary pallbearers will be: Sons and Grandsons; Flower attendants will be Missionary’s of the Conway District Church of God in Christ.
