Mathias
July 31,1859-May 12,1953
Mathias was born in Sainscheid, Hesse, Germany. He was a hussar(calvary) soldier in the German army for several years(probably 3 as that was the requirement at the time). The family emigrated to the United States in 1882. Christian(Mathias's Father) purchased railroad land for $1,000 on October 19, 1883, east of Paris on the "old military road" and they farmed the land.
On October 28, 1884 Mathias Klein and Christina Elsken were married in St. Benedicts Catholic church in Subiaco, AR. They settled on the land where Matt and his father farmed. In addition to farming, Matt hauled freight to towns north of the Arkansas River on a dray wagon.
About 1902 the family moved into a new home built on the western edge of Christians land. The house, for which Matt paid $1,000 in gold had five rooms downstairs and six upstairs.
On November 29, 1909, Christian deeded 80 acres of his land to Matt for the consideration of "$1.00 paid and love and affection for son Mathias". Matt grew wheat, oats, corn and sorghum, working the soil with his mules, plow and the hand labor of his children.
