Helen Karene Shannon 90, of Frisco, Texas passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009 following a long illness. She was born September 17, 1918 at Tuckerman, Arkansas to the late Thomas Allison and Lois Helena Fortenberry Brown.
She married Leister L. Shannon of Clinton, Arkansas on August 10, 1937.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leister L. Shannon, and an infant son James John Shannon.
Karene receieved her teaching degree from Arkansas State Teacher's College in Jonesboro, Arkansas and taught for many years in Swifton before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954. She taught English at Carrol High School until 1971 when she completed her Library Science degree at TWU. She served as research librarian for the Executive White House before returning to Texas as a librarian in Houston ISD, Flour Bluff ISD, and Delmar College. She was a longstanding member of Ayers St Church of Christ in Corpus Christi, AAUW, and member of numerous book and bridge clubs. She enjoyed organizing and sharing her love of history with many student travel groups to countries throughout Europe.
She is survived by her sons, Tommy L. Shannon and wife Mary Pace of Punta Gorda, FL; William Joseph Shannon and wife Celia of Rockport, Tx.; one daughter, Janelle Kay Foster and husband James of Richardson, TX; grandchildren are Jon U. Shannon, Michael L. Shannon, Shannon Kay Casada, Thomas Gregory Shannon, and Jamee Arrington, great grandchildren are Jon Michael Shannon, Tyler Casada, Thomas Pace Shannon, Colton Casada, Travis Casada, Connor Arrington, Nicholas Shannon, and Danielle Shannon; and sister - cousin, Ivon Soden of Jonesboro, Arkansas and brother, T. A. Brown of Tuckerman, Arkansas.
Casketbearers: James Foster, Michael Casada, Robert Roy Shannon, Jon Shannon, Michael Shannon, and Greg Shannon.
Visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00pm Saturday, July 4, 2009 at Roller McNutt Funeral Home Chapel Clinton, Arkansas.
Funeral Service will be 2:00pm Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Choctaw Church of Christ with Burial at Hunter Hill Cemetery Clinton, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations can be made to the Woman's Shelter of Corpus Christi, The American Heart Assoc. or the Charity of their choice.
