John was a coalminer in Logan County. He married Catherine Willems at Subiaco on 20 Nov 1923. Together they were parents of William John "Bill", James Robert, Charles Edward, Stella Mae, and Barbara Anna Schwartz.

Catherine was the eldest of twelve children of Anna Marie and John M. Willems. As such she was reknowned as an accomplished cook and spent much of her time mothering her younger siblings. She married John Schwartz another Logan County native on November 20, 1923. The couple had three sons and two daughters and lived out their lives in Logan County, AR.
