S.J. Hutcheson a well known Baxter County citizen, who has lived at Norfork for many years, died Sunday morning at 10:30. He had been ill from the result of a stroke for several weeks. He is survived by two sons, Vero of Mt. Home and Jack of Norfork; two sisters, Mrs. C.G. Hazelrigg of Seminole, OK and Mrs. Minnie Martin of Norfork; several grandchildren and many other relatives.
The funeral was held at Norfork in the school auditorium at 2:30 Monday afternoon with the Rev. Howard Sherrell, Christian minister of Searcy officiating. Judge John Asheley, a life long friend of Mr. Hutcheson's spoke following Rev. Sherrell.
The sermon preached by Rev. Sherrell was one of the most comprehensive sermons on life ever heard by the writer. Why and how we came here; our duty while here and how and why we leave this earth. He commended Sid's life by saying that he had the true community spirit and that his charitable efforts were made among a people where they were needed and understood. In other words, Sid Hutcheson lived his religion.
Judge Asheley dwelt on Sidney's life and the benefit he had been to the section in which he lived. He said, "There is more religion in a person who will shelter a stay dog, feed a hungry man and kindly pat a tired horse than there is in a man who build a church and prays in it. "That was Sidney's religion." The little daughter of one of Sidney's tenants spent the morning in gathering a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers and laid them among the offerings. "It is all we've got," she said. Commenting on this Judge Ashley said, "That little child preached a sermon that no preacher could preach."
A crowd of several hundred of Sidney's friends and relatives made up the large funeral cortege that followed him to his last resting place. They came from all over this section of Arkansas. The large school auditorium held about half of them. Beautiful flowers banked the casket, last tokens of those who knew and loved him. The music was impressively splendid.
The services and burial were typical of that of any man who has led the useful and charitable life that Sidney Hutcheson led.
