From "My Country Called" by Arnold Wright: "McPherson entered the Navy on March 3, 1944, and after training, was assigned to the USS Scurry, Mine Sweeper, attached to the Mine Craft Squadron 12. During the war in the Pacific, the USS Scurry participated in preinvasion mine sweeping operations off the coast of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Japan and China Sea. He was discharged at Camp Wallace, Texas, on May 18, 1946, and returned home."
