US Army

Purple Heart

Married July 26, 1952

He was a son of James W. and Martha B. Lovell.

From "My Country Called" by Arnold Wright: II was drafted into the Army on December 29, 1943, and was sent to Mineral Springs, Texas, for 16 weeks of basic training. I went to Fort Mead, Maryland, and shipped overseas, attached to the 53rd Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Army. We landed in England and stayed there for three days, then to France. There we met the 11th Panther Division SS Troops. My first major battle, and I had to get wounded! I was awarded the Purple Heart. We were in this light tank when the tank was hit and quit running. The round had come inside the tank, starting a fire. Knowing that the dead tank would draw fire, we got out and ran away as fast as we could. I heard the explosion, but didn't look back. I kept running. While overseas I saw two boys from back home, Calab Mitchell and Gordon Cousin. When the war ended, we were in Czechoslovakia, where we turned 4000 Germany prisoners over to the Russian Army. I was discharged at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, on November 16, 1945, returning to Benton and started farming."
