GIBSON, Mr. - {from The Bentonville Sun} Thursday morning about 8:30 Barney Bell, who lives near Robinson, killed an old man by the name of Gibson while on his way home by cutting his throat with a pocket knife. Mr. Bell has for years been an infidel but during revival services at Robinson last week was converted and joined the church. Since then he has been acting very queer and whenever he would be in a group of men, would begin preaching. Mr. Gibson, with two boys, had been to Robinson and had started home. On seeing Bell coming down the road the boys remarked that they had better cut through the field. Gibson said that he had known him all his life and was not afraid of him. He walked up and joined Bell. The boys could not hear the conversation but saw Gibson pick up a rock and hit Bell on the side of the face, thinking he could save himself. He stooped for another rock and while in the stooping position Bell jumped at him with an open knife, cutting the jugular vein. He then jumped on the body on his knees and stayed there until the boys ran to town to give the alarm. Then George Osborn came up and urged Bell to come with him. He took him on to town and a number of men staid with him until Sheriff Blake sent Deputy Jackson after him and brought him to the jail in Bentonville. When he was seen by Sheriff Blake this morning he asked: "Why am I in jail." Mr. Bell's wife will be remembered by her many Bentonville friends as Miss Cora Maxwell. Mr. Bell is a son of a prominent Ft. Smith man, Dr. Bell. ***** Mr. Bell has been declared insane and taken to the asylum at Little Rock.
