JOHN SNODERLY OF GARFIELD PASSES AWAY

John W. Snoderly, of Garfield, died April 23rd, 1934 at the age of 80 years. Funeral services were held by G.W. Williams and Bro. Criss of Bentonville. His body was laid to rest in the family cemetery on the Geo. Snoderly farm.

Born in Garfield Township, Benton county, Ark., Feb. 27, 1854, John W. Snoderly was the second of a family of eight children, three of whom survive, Mrs. Nan Broom and Miss Polly Snoderly of Oklahoma and a brother, George Snoderly of Garfield who occupies the Snoderly homestead. He had spent his entire life in a radius of three miles of his birthplace. He was married to Miss Georgia Potts, about 54 years ago. She preceded him in death some 24 years ago. To this union were born seven children, four of whom are living, Mrs. J.F. Taylor, Bartlesville, Ok., Mrs. Elmer Brown of Rogers, Mrs. Walter Davis of Clantonville and H.D. Snoderly of Garfield, with whom he lived. All attended his funeral. Fifteen grandchildren and two great grand children also survive.

Uncle John was a man who seemed to enjoy laboring with his hands and no doubt has as many days of hard labor to his credit as any man in Benton County. He was a man of unusual strength. An incident of lime kiln days is told him when a huge rock fell on a man. Three men did their best to remove it, but could not, until Uncle John came and freed the man.

Uncle John was among the early pioneers, just four being left in Garfield community. He was highly respected. Though uneducated, he stood for schools and made many sacrifices that his children could receive and education. He was devoted to his family. Mr. Snoderly professed a hope in Christ 12 years ago and attended church at Providence, tho never becoming a member.
