P. A. Billingsley was born May 22, 1874, near Violet Hill. He attended the home district school, the North Arkansas Academy at Old Philadelphia, and the LaCrosse Collegiate Institute. He began teaching at 17 and taught seven years. He served as Izard County sheriff from 1904 to 1908 and again from 1912 to 1916. He was the youngest sheriff in the state when first elected. He never sought any other political office and was never defeated. He moved to Kensett in 1917 where he was director and traveling salesman for a wholesale grocery for 17 years. He was one time the largest strawberry grower in White County, with 75 acres. He served as chairman of the county board of education of White County for over 10 years. Since 1933, Mr. Billingsley has been field supervisor for the Feed and Seed Loan of the U.S. Government, and his duties have carried him regularly into Cleburne, Stone, Izard, Fulton, Sharp and Independence counties. He and Mrs. Billingsley now make their home in Batesville.
