John Bradford was born in Henry County, Tennessee to R.B. and Mary Ann Bradshaw Bradford.

John spent his early life in Tennessee and when he became of age he began farming on his own account. John left Tennessee in 1857 and settled in Crawford County, Arkansas on March 4 1857 making the journey overland. On January 27, 1858 he married Mary Ann Ford, who was born January 17 in Hinds County, Mississippi, the daughter of Ferdinand and Elizabeth Whitford Ford.

On May 14, 1862 he enlisted in Company A, 1st Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, which was commanded by Col E L Harrison and served in the same as Sergeant under Capt Joshua S Dudley. Operating in Southwestern Missouri and Arkansas, he participated in the battles of Cassville, Newtonia, Forsythe, Mo, Huntsville, Ark, three battles at Fayetteville and Cane Hill. He was with General Blount when Price made his raid through Missouri and assisted in driving him from that territory. He was captured at Huntsville and was taken as a prisoner to Fort Smith and held for six weeks. He was then paroled and afterward exchanged, then he returned to the Army and served until August 23, 1865. He was then mustered out and returned to Crawford County.

He felt his mission was to preach in the Methodist Church and on September 18, 1872 he began his ministerial duties and had charge of churches in Benton, Washington, Madison, Franklin and Crawford Counties.
He was also a successful farmer with 400 acres of land of which 60 he cultivated, the rest remained timer land.
