OAKLEY, Sallie KINDLEY - Sallie Kindley Oakley was born March 28, 1858 on the old Kindley homestead about six miles northeast of Bentonville on the Pea Ridge highway. She was the daughter of Cyrus and Cynthia Anne Kindley who came to Arkansas as pioneers from North Carolina and Tennessee. Her childhood and early girlhood were spent here on the banks of the Sugar Creek where she loved to romp and play, to roam the hills and to listen to the sweet songs of the birds, the babbling brook and the gentle voices of nature. It was here that love of nature and of farm life so crept into her soul that she gladly devoted her whole life to their service. Her early education was obtained at the old Jefferson schoolhouse, just up the hollow from her home. Later she attended the Bentonville school
where she made a brilliant record as a student. At her commencement she was awarded a copy of Shakespeare's Complete Works for excellent scholarship. Then for two years she taught Jefferson school. Her marriage to Elijah Preston Oakley was solemnized on March 14, 1878, the Rev. Peter Carnahan officiating. To this union were born five children - two sons and three daughters. In her early girlhood she confessed her Savior and was united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. She was a noble Christian woman who believed that the true spirit of Christ could best be shown by kindly deeds and service to those about her. No one ever left her door cold, hungry and needy if it were in her power to help. Happiness came to her only in so far as she could give happiness to others. On December 7, 1928 she was stricken with flu, followed by pneumonia. After days of suffering she went to her Savior on the morning of December 26 at 6:50 o'clock. Funeral services were held at the Bentonville Mausoleum on Friday, Dec. 28 at 2:30 p.m. [She was laid to rest in the mausoleum.} Services were conducted by the Rev. A.W. Henderson, pastor of the Presbyterian church. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Cyrus Kindley Oakley, St. Louis and Elwood P. Oakley, Niles, Michigan; three daughters, Mrs. Hortense Adams, Miss Floy Anne Oakley, Seattle, Wash. and Miss Francile B. Oakley of the home; by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Robbins, Bentonville and Mrs. Emma Kindley Grammer, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, George C. Kindley, Ocean Springs, Miss. Mrs. Mollie Kindley of Gravette was a sister-in-law and the late American Ace, Field Kindley, was a nephew.
