CROWDER, Clara HUMPHREY - Mrs. George M. Crowder, a well known local writer and social worker of Bentonville, died at her home at the Park Springs Hotel on Saturday morning, December 13th, 1924. She was formerly Clara Humphrey and was born in Jamesport, Ky. on March 17th, 1860. She moved with her family to Carlinville, Ill. where she spent her girlhood, uniting with the Presbyterian church when quite young. She completed her education at the Blackburn College in Carlinville and married George M. Crowder on December 12th, 1876, of this union was born three children - Mrs. Guy Clark, Caldwell, Kansas, who died last May; Mrs. A.J. Vasey, Fort Worth, Texas and George T. Crowder of Bentonville. Mrs. Crowder came to Bentonville eleven years ago from Emporia, Kansas. She was a member of the Authors and Composers Society of Arkansas and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Until her death she was a prominent club woman and a great worker along all educational lines. Two years ago she was appointed by Governor McRae to visit and inspect all rural schools for an educational report of the district. She was an artist of ability, her pictures having taken prizes in the Middle States Contest in Chicago. She was an author and a story from her pen was awarded the Arkansas Federation prize last year. Her poem, the "Arkansas Birth," is well known over Arkansas. Mrs. Crowder is survived by her husband, two children and four grandchildren, besides a host of friends in the community and in the state who will mourn her loss.
