WHARTON, W.E. - The most sudden and unexpected death that has occurred in Bentonville for a long time was that of Mr. W.E. Wharton, the sad event occurring at about 2 o'clock this morning at his home in this city. He had been confined to his home only since last Thursday and many of his friends did not even know that he was sick. Up to within a short time of his death those near and dear to him did not realize that his condition was so serious. That dread disease, pneumonia, was the cause of his sudden taking away. We go to press too early today to secure data for an extended notice but expect to have an appropriate obituary for next week. Mr. W.E. Wharton was one of the very best citizens of Bentonville, a prominent and successful business man, and his passing has caused a pall of gloom to o'er shadow our city. He was about 56 years of age and had resided in Bentonville for the past 10 or 12 years. A wife and two children are left to mourn the loss of husband and father. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and as a christian he had few equals and in his christian character he set the world a worthy example.

WHARTON, William E. - William E. Wharton was born March 12, '47, was converted in early life at a camp meeting and joined the Presbyterian church at his old home, Lawson, Mo. In this church he served several years as deacon. He was married on Nov. 21, 1877 to Miss Margaret Nora Hurdle at Liberty, Mo. and there took the work of the Sabbath school where he made a brilliant success as a worker. When he found it necessary to leave the friends and co-workers plead earnestly that he should remain. After leaving Moody he staid a short time in West Plains and in '91 came to Bentonville. In '94 he was elected and installed elder in the Bentonville Presbyterian church, which office he filled faithfully until the time of his death. The love manifested toward the bereaved ones by friends and neighbors is eloquent of the esteem in which he was held. He was a good man. If he had a good word of encouragement for his fellow man he let him know. The very atmosphere of the sanctuary seems laden with a sadness which is oppressive but we must labor on through our short stay. Pastor.
