Harlan Cochran was the son of Andrew Jackson "Andy" & Ada Simmons Cochran. The front page of the September 7, 1923, issure of the Baxter Bulletin contained a short story about the accident shooting death of Harlan Cochran, a longer memorial written by a neighbor, and a classified ad announcing a public sale of A. J. Cochran's belongings. It is highly probably that the family moved from Baxter County shortly after Harlan Cocharan's death.
The memorial to Harlan Cochran follows:
HARLAN COCHRAN
Harlan Cochran, 16-year-old son of Mr. A. J. Cochran, was accidentally shot Wednesday morning, August 29, by Amos Crane, 10-year-old stepson of Mr. T. W. Crane.
Harlan was on the way to get some hogs out of a field of corn. He stopped at the Crane home, removed the shells from the double barreled shot gun he carried to shoot squirrels with, then reloaded the gun and put it down. The Crane boy took up the gun snapped the hammer and wounded the Cochran boy.
They were about eight feet apart. The shot was an angling one on the left side, just above and hitting the hip bone. The intestines were pierced, six shot passing clear through.
Kind friends carried the wounded boy a mile and a half to his home. The accident happened about 8 o'clock a.m. but a doctor did not arrive until 3 p.m. Dr. Sheid of Norfork examined the wound and advised that Harlan be taken to the hospital at Batesville as soon as possible. He was taken in Dr. Sheid's car to Norfork, caught the red ball freight trains, and accompanied by his father went to Batesville.
An operation was performed in an effort to save his life, but the lad failed to rally, dying at 6 o'clock Friday morning, August 31.
Harlan Cochran was born December 23, 1908, and is survived by his father, mother, two sisters, Mr. Cleo Angle of Nevada, Mo., Miss Gladis and Marvin, a younger brother of Arkana.
Funeral services were held Saturday evening at one o'clock in Norfork, conducted by the Methodist minister. Burial was in the Norfork cemetery.
"Don't worry about me Father," were one of Harlan's last requests. The sympathy of friends, neighbors, and readers of the Bulletin are extended to the bereaved family in this their sad hour of sorrow, and commend them to Him who doth all things well.--Written by a Neighbor.
