WEST FORK - Jean Crawford, age 75, of West Fork died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, in Fayetteville.

She is remembered as a woman with a strong spirit. She had a lifelong passion for reading, often nicknaming family and friends after characters from her favorite novels. In her youth Jean was a "ham" participating in pie suppers and Community Theater in the Mineral Springs area. As a young adult she worked for the Ozark Theatre on College Avenue and then with the Washington County Health Department.

She became a stay-at-home mother upon the birth of her son, Shane, and remained so until her younger daughter Krista was in fifth grade. During Frank's Navy service, she maintained the home fires, exercising her "Irish frugality," in South Carolina; Little Rock, Ark.; and Key West, Fla. Upon returning to Northwest Arkansas she went to work for the Soil Conservation Service.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; daughter, Krista Crawford-Mathis, Ph.D. and husband John Mathis, MD of Roanoke, Va.; one son, Shane Crawford of West Fork, Ark.; sister, Wanda Buckner and her husband Bob Buckner of Avoca, Ark.; one brother, Talbert Malone, his wife Patty of Farmington, and their daughter Maly Elizabeth Farmer, her husband Heath and their children; one grandson, Mason Crawford of Fayetteville and mother of Mason, Barbara McClelland; two sisters-in-law, Rosalee Kelly, her husband David Kelly and their children, Joel and Erika, her husband Dale and Georgeanne Crawford and one brother-in-law, George Crawford, Fayetteville, Ark., and many nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Porter, Gerald Reiff, Bill Smith, Charlie Urderhill, Donnie Underhill and Mason Crawford.

Family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at the Staybridge Suites, 1577 West
15th St., Fayetteville, Ark.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Mineral Strings Cemetery under the direction of Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville.
