KNOTT, Jimmy - Jimmy Knott, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Knott, Jr., died Wednesday afternoon following an accident Wednesday morning in which he was struck by a Ford coupe driven by C.H. Alspaugh who was driving south on A street below the Massey hotel at about 8:30 in the morning. The child's death is a tragic one in which the entire community is grief stricken. The lad had left the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Ara Dickson, whom he dearly loved and with whom he spent the greater portion of his time, to take a parcel of garments to the Coulter home on A street to be laundered. The child delivered the package and left the home to go on to his school work. He was crossing the street below the Coulter home when the accident happened. The tragedy apparently was one resulting from a combination of circumstances over which no control could be had. Two cars were driving south on A street as Jimmy left the Coulter lot to cross the street. He evidently saw the first but failed to note the coupe and stepped in front of it in crossing over, possibly to join a small girl who was probably a classmate. The driver of the coupe had noticed the girl on the right side of the street and had a premonition she might cross and was watching out for her and failed to see Jimmy approaching from the left and the coupe ran him down, striking in such a way as to fracture his skull on top and at the base. A party of traveling men from Kansas City saw the accident and came to the aid of Mr. Alspaugh and the boy was brought to the medical offices of Drs. Lindsey & Pickens for first aid treatment. However, medical aid was without avail and no surgical skill could give relief, the child's vitality gradually ebbing until 2 o'clock when the end came. Mrs. Elizabeth Temple, home demonstration agent, and Mr. Alspaugh were on the way to Siloam Springs and she had turned the car to him to drive when they started from their offices only a few minutes earlier. Both Mr. Alspaugh and Mrs. Temple are grief stricken at the tragedy, over which they had no control, and remaining with the lad until the end along with the immediate members of his family. Jimmy Knott was a favorite with his many friends and belonged to one of the best known pioneer families of northwest Arkansas. He is survived by a younger brother, Dickie Knott, his parents and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Knott, Sr., and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ara Dickson. Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Knott, Sr. on East Thirteenth street, conducted by Rev. A.W. Henderson, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The interment will be in the City cemetery.
