Lillie Jane Hatfield Hawley, 76, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at her home in Mt. Vernon. Born at Mt. Vernon, Arkansas, July 22, 1932, she was the youngest daughter of the late Shelly and Vera Ussery Hatfield.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Dunn; a brother, Fate Hatfield; step-son, Mike Hawley; two nephews, Mike Ward and Jim Dunn; and a brother and sister who died as infants.

She is survived by her husband James Hawley; a son Steven Hatfield of Mt Vernon; two step-sons, Mark and Chris Hawley of Houston, Texas; a sister, Virginia Lester of Mt Vernon; sister-in-law, Geraldine Hatfield; one nephew; two nieces; and a special great niece that she helped to raise, Cynthia Hutchison of Houston, Texas.

She was a veteran of the Women’s Army Corp, serving during the Korean War.

She began a 40-year career in nursing in 1956 when she was hired as one of the first female nursing assistants ever to work in the Veterans Hospital in Houston, Texas. After six years, she went to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked 32 more years including 14 years as a Pharmacy Technician, before retiring in 1995. She worked her last six years at Conway Human development Center.

The body will be cremated.

Because of her love for animals the family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Faulkner County Humane Society.
