CARROLL, Robert M. - Death has again entered our midst and claimed for its victim one of our most highly esteemed citizens in the person of R.M. Carroll who died at his home near Bentonville on Thursday morning last at ten o'clock after a long, protracted and severe illness. Mr. Carroll was an estimable, Christian gentleman and bore the highest esteem of all who knew him. He was a consistent and devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. The funeral services were held at the family residence Friday morning at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. F.T. Charlton, the pastor, and the remains were taken to the Odd Fellow's cemetery and interred. The Democrat joins the many friends of the bereft family in extending sympathy to them in their hour of sore affliction. We hope that although they may feel lonely here without him the kind words and life deportment of the dear departed husband, father and brother may ever comfort them and shed a hallowed influence on their lives.

CARROLL, Kate BRAITHWAITE - Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Braithwaite Carroll, aged 77 years, widow of the late Mat Carroll whose death occurred Friday morning, Dec. 2nd, 1932 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruby Gamble, at Claremore, Oklahoma, were held here at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Nazarene Church {the edifice that formerly was occupied by the Bentonville Cumberland Presbyterian Church}, conducted by the Rev. A.W. Henderson, pastor of the Bentonville Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. W.O. Felts, Nazarene pastor and with hymns sung by the male quartet of the Bentonville Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Interment was in the Bentonville cemetery by the side of her husband who died here in 1893. The old Bentonville Cumberland Presbyterian Church building, now occupied by the Nazarene congregation, was constructed of bricks made by Mrs. Carroll's husband, Mat Carroll, who was a brother of the late Bart Carroll of Bentonville and were burned in the kiln operated just north of Bentonville many years ago by Mrs. Carroll's father, the late John Braithwaite. For that reason and the fact that throughout her long life, since early girlhood, Mrs. Carroll had remained a faithful member of the Cumberland division of the Presbyterian Church, the holding of the last churchly rites for her and the last collective earthly tribute of friends to her memory in that old church edifice was peculiarly appropriate. Born on December 3rd, 1855 Mrs. Carroll's death occurred one day before she reached her 77th year. A daughter of John Braithwaite, an Englishman who came direct to the Territory of Arkansas and to what is now Benton County and homesteaded in 1920{?} his first 43.9 acres just north of what was then the small trading center that now is Bentonville. Mrs. Carroll was born in the log house which was the family home until her father built the brick house which stands today at the top of Braithwaite Hill. She was married in the same neighborhood and until going to live with her children several years ago had spent the greater part of her life in or near Bentonville. She is survived by one son, Gus Carroll of Los Angeles, Cal. and by two daughters, Mrs. Walter Gamble of Claremore, Okla. and Mrs. Frank Trone of Sapulpa, Okla. Two sons and one daughter, Alonzo and Ernest Carroll and Miss Lelia Carroll, died several years ago. She is also survived by a number of grandchildren and nephews and nieces but was herself the last survivor of the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. John Braithwaite, the founders of that family in this country. The last of her brothers and sisters to die were William Braithwaite of near Bentonville, George Braithwaite of Southwest City, Mo. and Mrs. Frank Walker of Rogers, Arkansas. Among relatives here for the funeral other than those living near Bentonville were her daughters, Mrs. Walter Gamble of Claremore and Mrs. Frank Trone of Sapulpa; her granddaughter, Miss Lucille Trone of Sapulpa; and her nephews and nieces, Mr. and Mrs. Berry Walker, Mrs. Will Putman, Mrs. Edwin Jackson and Don Walker, all of Rogers.

CARROLL, Katherine BREAITHWAITE - Mrs. Katherine Breaithwaite Carroll died Dec. 2nd at her home at Claremore, Okla. at the age of nearly 77 years. Funeral services were held at the former Cumberland Presbyterian Church where all the family had worshiped for so many years in the past. Rev. A.W. Henderson, pastor of the Presbyterian Church here, officiated. Interment was made in the Carroll lot at the Bentonville Cemetery. Katherine Breaithwaite was born Dec. 3rd, 1855 near Bentonville on the Breaithwaite homestead. She was married to Robert Madison Carroll Oct. 1877 and of this union 6 children were born; 3 are living. Her husband died in Jan. 1891. She was born, reared and married on the Breaithwaite farm north of Bentonville and lived many years at the brick house her father built on the homestead farm in 1872. She experienced some of the greatest joys and deepest sorrows of her life there. Aunt Kate, as she was lovingly called by relatives and friends, was a noble woman, a true Christian, a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, a kind helpful neighbor, a true loyal friend. After her husband's death she took up her life work bravely, training and caring for her five children and tenderly nursing her invalid mother. She was next to the youngest child of John and Sarah Breaithwaite who came to Benton County in about 1832 and entered a large tract of land north of Bentonville. She is the last member of the family. Her parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers preceded her in death. Her husband, Robert Madison Carroll, next to the youngest child of Bartholomew and Elizabeth Carroll, was born in Shelby County, Mo. in 1850 and came with his parents to Benton County, Arkansas in 1854. After his father's death in 1855 the family moved to Butler, Bates County, Mo. He was taken into the Union Army as bugler about 1864 at the age of 14 years and was stationed at Denver, Colo. during the time he served. He came to Benton County again in 1866 to reside. He was a farmer and brick maker, a highly esteemed citizen and was familiarly known as Mat Carroll. Aunt Kate has lived for a number of years with her daughter, Mrs. Ruby Gambill, in different parts of Oklahoma. She had been ill since June with heart and stomach trouble and passed away with a heart attack Friday morning Dec. 2nd. She is survived by one son, Gus Carroll, Los Angeles, Calif and by two daughters, Mrs. Effie Trone of Sapulpa, Okla. and Mrs. Ruby Gambill of Claremore, Okla. Nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.
