*HISTORY: The Mt. Zion Cemetery is located directly behind the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church which is located approximately 5 1/2 miles northeast of Monticello on County Road 80. There are several unmarked graves and several stone that are no longer legible.
In 1882 Will & Margaret Mathis donated land for a church and Cemetery. Around 1886 a church was built but later burned. Around 1890's the cemetery was started. In 1895 the second Church was built in its present location. (Ref.: Shumpert Ridgell).
