*Alexander was born to Nathan Butler Carrel and Janet Graham Carrel in Eutaw, Greene, Alabama. He was a Confederate Civil War soldier having served with 40th regiment Alabama infantry. He married Sallie Hawkins Elliott 30 may 1871 in Springfield, Greene, Missouri. The newspaper stated they left right after the ceremony to begin their new life in Selma, Alabama.
