MELBOURNE — Les Newsome, 70, of Melbourne died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at his home.
Born Nov. 12, 1939, in Benton, he was the son of Garner and Deedy Godwin Newsome. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Mimi Ramirez on March 11, 1972, in Guatemala. He was a lifelong entrepreneur. While living in California he owned and operated a shoe store. While living in Arkansas, he bought and sold scrap metal and was a farmer. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years; four sons, Leslie Clay Newsome of California, Richard Newsome and Juan Ramirez, both of Melbourne, and Christopher Newsome of Pleasant Plains; two daughters, Laura Beth Newsome and Grace Newsome McNeil, both of California; a brother, Fred Turner of Texarkana; a sister, Virginia Steward of Texarkana; and three grandchildren, Jeanine Newsome, Iliana Maria Newsome and Nicholas Gabriel Newsome.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, James Turner and Godwin Newsome.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. today at Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne. Burial was in Knob Creek Cemetery under the direction of Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Pallbearers were Armando Meadina, Leodoldo Meadina, Jesus Baldera, Juan Meadina, James Burkhart and Chris Hill.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim Frizzell and R.J. Blankenship.
