Wardell Eugene Washington, 76, of Hamburg died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Little Rock and had lived in Hamburg for the past 43 years. He was a retired teacher for the Hamburg School District and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, the chairman of the Ashley County Chapter of the American Red Cross and a member of the Red Cross Disaster Team, VFW, Hamburg Parks and Recreation committee and the American and Canadian Numismatic associations.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Jessie B. Washington; three sons, Prentice Washington and wife Angela of Rockledge, FL, Michael Washington and wife Brenda of Hamburg and Oscar Coleman of Detroit, MI; his mother-in-law, Alberta Withers of Detroit, MI; two brothers, Raymond Washington of Little Rock and James Washington of Salinas, CA; two sisters, Melba Miers of Omaha, NE, and Muriel Cameron of Pflugerville, TX; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 2, at 11 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Burial was at Johnson Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg. Pallbearers were Clarence and Claude Watkins, James Spurlock, Glenn Myers, Donald Wayne and Hal Gibson. Honorary pallbearers were members of VFW Post 9360 and King Solomon Grand Lodge AF and AM.
