BUCHANAN, A.E. - Died, at his residence near Bentonville Feb. 2nd, 1899, A.E. Buchanan, in the 69th year of his age. The deceased was born on Cane Hill, Washington county, Ark. Aug. 16th, 1830. His parents, Isaac and Naomi Buchanan, were amongst the first settlers of Cane Hill and of Northwest Arkansas. He was the second of a family of seven sons and one daughter. He remained with his parents under the roof that covered his infant cries and sheltered his childhood years until manhood, alternately assisting in the cultivation of the farm and pursuing his studies. He received the foundation of his education at Cane Hill College, then the most popular institution of learning in the State. In 1854, accompanied by J. P. Carnahan, he rode on horseback from Cane Hill, Ark. to Lebanon, Tenn. for the purpose of entering Cumberland University and taking a special course in civil engineering. Completing this course he returned to the State of Missouri and entered at once upon the work he had so carefully and thoroughly prepared himself for, and through which he won his way into important and profitable positions in several extensive railroad systems in this and in other States. On May 20th, 1858 he was united in matrimony with Henrietta Smettem of Rolla, Mo. To them were born two children, W.E. and Annie. W.E. Buchanan and wife, Annie Buchanan Shore and daughter, were with him in his sickness and these, together with his devoted wife and companion, did all that loving hearts and helping hands could unto the end. Mr. Buchanan was one of our best citizens and in his death the community suffers irreparable loss. He was not a member of the visible church yet when we view his whole life work, so much of which was devoted to the good of his fellow-man and to the interest of the church, we are comforted with the hope that he was a member of the invisible church, and an heir of the incorruptible inheritance. May the supporting grace and the comforting spirit of the blessed Christ rest upon the beloved but bereaved family. P. Carnahan.

BUCHANAN, W.E. - {from The Bentonville Sun} W.E. Buchanan was found in his room at his residence in East Bentonville dead at 12 o'clock today by the servant. His death occurred some time in the forenoon. He awoke the servant at 7 o'clock and told the negro boy to feed the stock as he did not feel well, and went back to bed. At noon a gentleman called to see him and he was found dead, thought to be from heart failure. Will has many friends here who are sorry to learn of his death. He was at home by himself, his wife being in Texas on a visit with friends and relatives.
