Dr. Barnabas Paul Funchess was born in Hinds county, Miss. Dec. 4th, 1828 and died at his home in Bentonville, Ark. May 24th, 1910 at 6:30 p.m., aged eighty-one years, five months and twenty days. He was married to Katherine Amandaville Rutherford Aug. 18th, 1853. To this union were born four children, one boy and three girls. One of the daughters, Mrs. Nunn, died in 1895. Bro. Funchess received his medical education in Memphis, Tenn. and began his profession in early manhood, continuing in his calling until failing health compelled him to retire. He went from his childhood home in Mississippi to Kansas in 1871 and came to Bentonville, Ark. in 1891. Here he spent the last days of his long and useful life. He was greatly in love with Bentonville and its people. During the last few months his health has greatly declined. He had almost entirely lost his sight and was evidently on life's rapid decline. He seemed as well as usual on the day of his death until a few minutes before his death. He had spoken of feeling well and had been out during the day considerably. He was in the yard when he spoke of feeling very weak. Friends were called and he was carried into his room and laid on his bed where he breathed his last and went to be with Jesus. He spent his last days with his dear companion in his quiet little cottage home. He was devoted to this, his last earthly dwelling place. He was converted and joined the Methodist Church in early manhood. He lived and died in the faith. His life was a beautifully consistent one. His influence for good was felt by all who knew him. No man ever lived among us whose life was a greater benediction. His going away is a sore bereavement to us all. He leaves his companion, one son, two daughters and grandchildren, besides many other friends. The funeral was conducted in the M.E. Church, South where a large number of friends assembled to pay respect to one dear to all. After the services the Masonic brethren laid his body in the City cemetery with Masonic honors to rest in hope till Jesus comes to call us from the grave. R.E.L. Bearden.

FUNCHESS, Barnabas Paul - In the death of Dr. B.P. Funchess this community loses one of the most highly respected and universally loved men ever residing here and notwithstanding the fact that he had lived to a ripe old age and in the very nature of things it was not at all probable that he could remain on this earth much longer yet the loss of this great and good man is keenly felt and greatly regretted by everyone who knew him. Possessed of a rare intellect, combined with an amiable disposition and goodness of soul unsurpassed, he scattered good cheer and sunshine wherever he went, exerting a wonderful influence for good over all with whom he came in contact and in return therefore was most devotedly loved by everybody. Peace to his ashes! Condolence to the bereaved family.

We wish to announce that the commencement recital which was to have been given June 2nd by Mrs. J.C. Hennon's class, was postponed on account of the unexpected death of Mrs. Hennon's father, Dr. B.P. Funchess, which occurred May 24th. Miss Lula Woods has kindly taken charge of the recital which will be given June 9th at the opera house with but few changes. As Mrs. Hennon has for several years past donated the proceeds of her concerts to the Cemetery Association, she does likewise this year, therefore we hope to have splendid patronage for this most worthy cause.
