Rev. Samuel Lawrence Arnold, 71, of Hamburg died Monday, October 31, 2011, at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. A native of Camden, he was a resident of Hamburg for the past 32 years and a former resident of Chicago, IL. He was a retired African Methodist Episcopal Minister and a member of the Soldiers Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hamburg. Rev. Arnold served as presiding elder for approximately 20 years for the Monticello District of the South Arkansas Conference of the Twelfth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, also presiding over the West and Central Arkansas Conference. Before he was appointed presiding elder he had pastored churches throughout Southeast Arkansas and Northeast Arkansas, served as a Hamburg City councilman for nine years and was also on the Ashley County Quorum Court for 16 years.

He is survived by his wife of two years, Cherry Ridgell-Arnold; five sons, Cleotha Robinson of Omaho, NE, Raymond Arnold of Los Angeles, CA, Samuel Arnold, Jr., and LaDarian Arnold of Hamburg and Lawrence Arnold of Little Rock; two stepsons, Rodney Trotter Jr., and Lance Ridgell of Monticello; five daughters, Sharon Arnold-Walls and husband Andre and Meyonna Arnold of Hamburg, Carolyn Cromwell and husband James of Fayetteville, NC; Chanel Carter and husband James of Woodbridge, VA, and Peggy Brown and husband Earl of Bastrop, LA; one brother, Rev. John Wesley Arnold and wife Evisteen of Hamburg; 20 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Evelyn Arnold; two sons, James and Lawrence Arnold; his parents, Rev. Robert and Sutilla Primm-Arnold; and three brothers, Richard Arnold, Rase Brown, and Robert Lee Arnold, Jr.

Services were at 2 p.m Friday, November 4, at Pilgrim Rest A.M.E. Church of Monticello with Bishop Samuel L. Green officiating. Pallbearers were Revs. Nolan Watson, James Hooper, James Thomas, James Giles, Johnny Kelly and Clarence Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers were justices of the Ashley Co. Quorum Court and Hamburg City Council members. Burial was in Johnson Memorial Cemetery under the directions of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
