James Weldon Crider, age 82, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away Monday, January 23, 2012, at the Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born January 9, 1930, in Pearson, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Paris D. Crider and Nollye Christene James Crider.
James was retired from the construction business and had worked on many commercial projects, including sewage and water treatment plants in central Arkansas, buildings at the Air Force base, nursing homes, funeral homes, the Baptist Hospital, coal-fired generator at Newark, and the barracks at Varner Prison. He served our country during the Korean War as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force and was awarded three bronze stars. He was also a veteran of the Army National Guard.

James was a lover of gospel singing. He and his wife Betty traveled many miles over Arkansas and out-of-state to sing Gospel songs. James was honored to be elected President of the Cleburne County Gospel Singing Convention for eleven years. He met many dear friends through his love of singing. James was a member of the Wilburn Community Church where he attended services for as long as he was able.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jean Birdsong Crider; two sons, Harold Gene Crider and his wife, Shirley, of Pangburn and Jimmy Dale Crider of Heber Springs; two brothers, Richard Lesley Crider of Quitman and George Layne Crider of Conway; one sister, Patsy Gayle Hodges of Quitman; one grandson, James Leon Crider; three granddaughters, Kelly Ann George of Berryville, Jessica Goodwin of Pangburn, and Bobbie Jean Lamb of Ft. Smith; and six great grandchildren. James is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel. Interment will follow in the Shiloh Cross Roads Cemetery. James Crider, Thomas George, Rickey Ringer, William Lamb, Frank Schneider, and Gary Taylor will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Roland, Jr. and Leon Shepherd.
