LOCKE, James Thomas - While our people knew that Prof. Tom Locke was ill and that he had been compelled to retire from his work in the High School several months ago, very few save his most intimate friends realized the seriousness of his condition and the news of his death last Friday evening about six o'clock came as a most unwelcome shock to practically the entire community. Death came as a result of complications of asthma and heart trouble. He died at his home on West Persimmon street in the northwest part of town. Funeral services were held at the Central M.E. church Saturday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Crichlow. Members of the school board acted as pall bearers and the pupils of the Eighth grade, which he taught in the High School building this year, attended the services in a body. Burial was in the Rogers cemetery James Thomas Locke was born in Shelbyville, Tenn. April 18, 1865. He came to Benton county when a young man and has taught in the county schools continuously ever since, over a period of thirty-five years. He had taught in the country schools most until he moved to Rogers, where he served as principal in the days before there was a regular high school, in the Fairground Addition school, and for the past seven years has been at the head of the city grammar school. In October of this year failing health compelled him to give up his work after having served this community faithfully and well for nearly his entire working life.
