Lucy May Harris Martin, age 88, of Warren died Friday, October 30, 2009 at her home. She was born October 19, 1921 at Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of the late Edward Crampton Harris and Lucy May Bradford Harris. Mrs. Martin was a 1942 graduate of Wellesley College. She joined the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant. She was stationed in Panama City, Florida, where she met her future husband, James Kenneth Martin of Warren. They were married December 4, 1943. Mr. Martin died February 15, 1995. She was also predeceased by her sister Marian Cockrell and two brothers, George S. Brown and Dr. Crampton Harris. Mrs. Martin was active in First Presbyterian Church, Warren, for many years. As a charter member of the Warren Junior Auxiliary, she wrote the motto for the national association that is still used today. She had a quick mind and a clever wit. She loved to enter jingle contests and won the family’s first color TV by writing one. An avid reader, she served as Bradley County Librarian for 4 years. She played in the same bridge club for over 50 years. She was the bookkeeper at the family business, Martins, for several years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She raised her children to be strong, independent and caring. Survivors include her son Warren Mayor Bryan Martin and his wife Dr. Sue Martin, her daughter Lucy Martin Neal and spouse Charles of Little Rock, and her daughter Elizabeth Lee Martin of Austin, Texas; 8 grandchildren: Dr. Bradford Lyon and wife Karen of Knoxville, TN, Lucinda Lyon Buford and husband Barry of Dallas, TX, John Lyon and wife Wendy and Martin Lyon and wife Kelly, all of Little Rock, Laura Charanza and husband Richard of Coppell, TX and David Martin and wife Crystal of Missouri City, TX; 12 great grandchildren: Lee and Eva Lyon of Knoxville, TN, Anna and Harrison Buford of Dallas, TX, Lucy Grace, Delaney, John Philip, and Landon Lyon of Little Rock, Carson Charanza of Coppell, TX, Caleigh, Camryn, and Dawson Martin of Missouri City, TX. The family wishes to thank the ladies who faithfully cared for her during the last few years: Norma Kolen, Patsy Tatum, Brandy Butler, Rachel York, Audrey Clark, Nettie Overton and Gloria Wylie. Memorial service was Monday, November 2, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Warren by Rev Dari Victoria Rowan. Janice McAllister was the organist.
