BELLA VISTA — Edward William "Bill" Sengel left his family and friends on March 7, 2008, while in the care of the wonderful nurses and aides at Concordia Care Center, Bella Vista. Bill was born to Edward William and Grace Sengel on March 13, 1919, in Tulsa, Okla.

Bill served in World War II from 1944 to 1946 and was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the US. Army Infantry.

He graduated number one in his class in Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga.

After his service in World War II, Bill worked for Schlumberger Well Services Company and retired to Bella Vista in 1970. He began as a "roughneck" on oil wells and was eventually promoted to a position as a log analyst. Bill was chosen "Man of the Year" by the Petroleum Club in Oklahoma City and at the time was the only person chosen for that honor who did not have a college degree.

As a self-educated man he went on after his retirement to write a book on oil well logging and lectured at several universities across the country.

Bill's passion in life was his family, his golf game and his woodworking. He made exquisite custom furniture and cabinetry for many homes in the Bella Vista area. He also refinished antiques and there was nothing he could not make, repair or make more beautiful because of his vision. He was a true craftsman.

He was a founding member of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista and handcrafted many of the furnishings still in use at the church including the crosses that hang on the outside wall of the church and the cross above the alter in the sanctuary. St. Theodore's honored Bill for all his work on "Bill Sengel Sunday" and named the parish hall after him.

Standing 6 feet 6, Bill was not only a giant among men, and also to his two children when they were growing up in Oklahoma City; and not just for his physical stature, but because he was much loved and admired by all who knew him. He could be counted on to always give wise counsel and set a great example to help guide his children on the path to adulthood.

Bill his preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Frances, and his two sisters, Martha and Kyle.

Survivors include his two children, Stephanie Sherwin and her husband Philip of Roland and Randy Sengel and his wife Nancy of Norman, Okla.; four grandchildren, Tamara Cobb, Mark Rolen, Kiersten Sharrock, Amanda Sengel, Erin Sengel and one great-grandson, Dawson Cobb. Also surviving is his loving wife, June Winter Sengel, and her four sons, Wally Winter and his wife Peggy of Bella Vista, John Winter and his wife Joyce of Rogers, Mark Winter and his wife Kathryn of Valparaiso, Neb., and Bob Winter and his wife Lucy of Lincoln, Neb., along with the Winter boys four children.

Bill Sengel will be very much missed by his loving family and his memory is truly cherished. Thank you, dad, for an you did and continue to do.

Memorial Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 11th 2008 at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kenneth T. Parks officiating.

Memorials may be sent to St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista.
