BENTONVILLE — Ernest G. Lawrence Jr., 67, of Bentonville, died Friday, May 31, 2002. Ernest, the son of Ernest G. Lawrence Sr. and May Christie Lawrence, was born on Nov. 17, 1934, in Memphis, Tenn.

He was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas in 1956 and his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1958. He was admitted to practice law in the State of Arkansas in 1958 and before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Julia Dickinson; two daughters, Peggy S. Lawrence and Vickie S. Mitchell, both of Branson, Mo.; one son, William E. Lawrence of Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren, Evan Lawrence, Scott Mitchell and Kristin Mitchell.

Ernest was an active member of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista. He practiced law in Bentonville for more than 30 years and in 1993 associated with the Little Rock Law Firm of Mitchell, Willams, Selig, Gates and Woodyard.

His accomplishments include being mayor of the City of Bentonville, 1971-1974; a member of the Bentonville School District Board, 1975-1986, president and secretary; member of the Bentonville Rotary Club; member of the Beaver Water District Board of Directors; member of the founding boards of the Helen R. Walton Children's Center and the Peel House Foundation; Army Judge Advocate General Corps, 1958-1962; recipient of the Army Commendation Medal.

Arrangements are under the direction of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista.

No formal visitation is planned, but friends are asked to share a memory by signing a memory book on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7 at St. Theodore's Episcopal Church from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be family only.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Ernest be made to a charity of choice.
