Mrs. Ada D. Maris, who departed this life on the 18th of November, deserves more than a passing notice from the friends she left behind and we who knew her best beg to lay an humble tribute upon her new made grave. She was a native of Kentucky, born on the 22nd day of April 1847 in Madison county and educated at Daughters College, Harrodsburg, graduating in the spring of 1865 in what was then considered one of the best female colleges in the South. Emigrating with her parents to Illinois she was married while yet quite young, Aug. 14, 1867, to Mr. W.H.H. Maris and together they began life in Winfield, Kansas, a town then in its infancy. There they at once took a leading position in society and in business, prosperous and held in the highest esteem by all who knew them. Both were members of, and active workers in, the Christian church and out of their first earnings and with scarcely any aid erected one of the first houses for worship in that place. Alone and almost single handed they maintained and supported the same for years while their own home was the stopping place for all ministers and newcomers. A mistaken confidence in an enterprise that promised fruitful results brought to them, as it did to many others, adversity, while to crown their great and unexpected financial misfortune the faithful husband and father was stricken while yet in the prime of manhood with consumption and in the hope of regaining his health they moved to Benton county in the spring of 1887, locating near Pea Ridge Academy where he soon passed away a victim to this incurable malady, leaving his devoted wife with five children all in their minority to fight the battle of life alone and among strangers. Faithfully and uncomplaingly did she accept the task and keep the sacred trust, contending against such odds as but few have been called upon to encounter. Through self-sacrifice, sorrow and unremitting toil this noble woman has cared for and educated her loved ones until the great burden seemed just ready to be lifted from her weary heart, while hope and contentment once more illumined the dark way. Herself a favorite teacher in the high school at Rogers with three of her children now grown and each having positions and all working in unison to make home what it should be, and all cheered with bright visions of happiness centered in and around the thought of rest and comfort in store for their faithful, patient mother, with a widening circle of new-made friends, the future seemed a bright reality, reaching far into the years to come. W.R. Davis, M.D.
