William Hadley Thompson, age 86 of Telluride, Colorado died Saturday October 15, 2011 in Denver, Colorado following a brief illness. He was born in Memphis, TN on June 12, 1925 to Vance Maynard Thompson, Sr. and Elizabeth Greer Thompson of McCrory, AR.

Mr. Thompson attended elementary school in McCrory and was a graduate of the Columbia Military Academy, Franklin, TN. He attended Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN prior to serving in the Army during World War II. During his basic training he was stationed out west and it was during that time he developed a love for the mountains and snow skiing. He was also a graduate of the Parsons School of Design in New York and owned and operated an antiques store in Little Rock, AR and later in Telluride, Colorado.

“Uncle Hadley,” as he was affectionately known, first arrived in Telluride in 1977 to attend the Telluride Jazz Festival. While at the festival he, along with his niece and several friends, volunteered at the popular “Canal Street Corn Booth.” After that visit he decided to make Telluride his permanent home. He became active in community affairs in Telluride having served on the Historic and Architectural Review Commission. He was an avid snow skier, gardener and collector of mineral specimens. Introducing southern hospitality to the mountains of Telluride, he graciously opened his home to family and friends. Throughout the years he became an avid champion of Telluride and all it had to offer, introducing later generations of his family to skiing and mountain life.

Mr. Thompson was pre-deceased by two brothers, Vance Maynard Thompson, Jr., Memphis, TN and H. Ripley Thompson, McCrory, AR; one sister, Elizabeth Thompson Russell, Hillsboro, FL, and niece Caroline Russell Gregory, Memphis, TN. He is survived by one brother John Greer Thompson, Sr., of McCrory, AR and a sister Ruth Thompson Trammell of Nashville TN, 13 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and a host of friends from Colorado, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

Pallbearers were his nephews, John Greer Thompson, Jr, Vance M Thompson, III, E Jan Thompson, Vance Ripley Trammell, John Hadley Trammell, Marshall Trammell, III, and John P Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be Randall Marsh, Steve Witowksi, Joshua Thompson, Caleb Thompson, Ripley Trammell, Jr. and Clayton Trammell. A memorial service will be conducted at the Elks Lodge in Telluride, CO at a later date.
