MOUNTAIN VIEW – Tomie Chester Cleveland, 76, of Mountain View died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at a hospital in Mountain Home.
Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Sulphur Rock, he was the son of Edgar and Willie Tate Cleveland. He was a World War II Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific in 1944 and 1945. He moved to Mountain View in 1986 from Leland, Miss. He was a research entomologist for the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Business Service. In Missississippi, he was an elder in the church and a member of the Lions Club. He was a member of School Avenue Church of Christ in Mountain View, a musician and entertainer at the Ozark Folk Center and a member of the Lonesome Cowboys. He had received several awards and honors for his performances.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marie Cleveland; three daughters, Barb Mearing and Pat Caldwell, both of Mountain Home, and Sue Bunn of Searcy; two sons, Bob Cleveland of Kansas City, Mo., and Tommy Cleveland of Mountain View; three sisters, Aline Phillips of Fort Smith, Jean Bieber of Memphis and Shirley Guy of Walnut Ridge; two brothers, Arthur Cleveland of Searcy and Jim Cleveland of Little Rock; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the School Avenue Church of Christ with Brad McAfee officiating. Burial will be in Flatwoods Cemetery at Mountain View with arrangements by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Mountain View.
Pallbearers are Philip Mearing, Michael Cleveland, Eric Cleveland, Donald Wherry, Billy Wherry, James Oran Griffin, Mike Magness and Mitchell Gardner.
Alternate pallbearers are Danny Griffin and Dickie Cleveland.
