Died, at his home 2 miles north of Eldorado, Benton county, Ark., Archilles Foster, of cancer, on Feb. 11th. The deceased was born in Wilks county, N. Carolina April 7th, 1817 and therefore was, at the time of his death, 74 years, 10 months and 4 days old. The deceased was married at the age of 33 years to Miss Martha J. Bookout by which marriage she had 13 children, 10 of whom still live to mourn his loss, 9 of whom were present at the funeral, which was conducted by Bro. J.M. McCraw who had long been intimately acquainted with the deceased, both in this county and also in Hill county, Texas. The deceased was a commissioned officer for 32 years, was assessor and collector 10 years in Hill county, Texas, was also county commissioner 4 years, had been Esquire in this county for a number of years, which office he held at the time of his death. Bro. Foster was a member of the Baptist church near 40 years, nearly all of which time he served as deacon. The old veteran of the cross was so well reconciled to die that he was even desirous to “depart and be at rest.” And so he disposed of his effects by will in a just and equitable manner some months before his death. When the end drew near he then made arrangements for his brethren, Ed Holcomb, R.M. Phillips and Joseph Clark to throw the first dirt in his grave after his body should have been placed there as previously directed by himself and as the end drew nearer he requested the undersigned to write his obituary and we must say that in the death of Brother Foster the county has lost one of her best citizens, the church one of her strong pillars and his family has sustained an irreparable loss.

(from Shady Grove) Mrs. M.J. Foster, who has been sick for some days, died Sunday morning at 5 o’clock and was buried Monday afternoon at the McCraw graveyard. Deceased had been a resident of this section for a number of years and leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn her demise. The sympathy of all is extended the bereaved.
