GARFIELD — Herbert Ross, 88, of Garfield died Nov, 30, 2005, in Overland Park, Kan. He was born Jan. 4, 1917, to Will Ross and Estella Eldridge Ross. He was a soybean farmer and cattle farmer in Labette County, Kan., for 35 years before retiring to Garfield in 1983. He served as mayor of Garfield for two terms as did his father and brother, Coen Ross. He was a member of the Church of Christ and served more than 30 years as Elder in the Church of Christ in Parsons, Kan., and later in Garfield. He was the 1935 Class valedictorian of six graduates at Gatfield High School. He later played on basketball and baseball town teams in Garfield and Pea Ridge. He lived briefly in Los Angeles where he tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Club. He married his wife, Ruth Schell of Pea Ridge in 1939, and they were married 52 years until her death in 1991. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Ross Harrell in 1963, and a granddaughter, Stacey Leigh Ross in 2004.

Survivors include his second wife, Lona Marie Edwards Reynolds: two sons, Lanny Herbert Ross and wife Genell of Leawood, Kan., and Richard Joe Ross of Kansas City, Mo.; two grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, Suzie Morrison and Gary Reynolds.

Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Garfield Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the church at P.O. Box 228, Garfield, 72732.
